Last year, I had a miscarriage. Within the months following, I experienced some whack hormonal issues. Insomnia, fatigue, hair loss, and most importantly to me, my period was irregular. And folks, my period hasn’t been regularly out of whack more than a couple times during my life since I first got my period at about nine years old. So any irregularity outside of my traditional 28 day cycle completely throws me off.
So in doing some research and talking with my mother (who is a natural health consultant), I decided to give Maca Root Powder a try. My mom related a story to me of a woman who used Maca for her infertility, and got pregnant within two month of using it…after years of trying!
I found that Walmart had a small 8 ounce bag for about $6. Generally I avoid buying supplements from Walmart, because anything close to their generic brand is pretty low quality. But I took a chance on this one. Almost immediately, I noticed my period beginning to regulate.
After that small bag was emptied, I splurged and bought the Navitas brand from my local Fresh Thyme, a 16 ounce bag for $22. I take about a tablespoon a day and that bag has lasted me over a month and half. It is definitely much better quality than the Walmart brand and I would highly recommend it.
I feel a lot more energized when I take it and it has regulated my wonky periods! That alone is reason enough for me to completely love this little superfood. In my research, the only caution I have found is for pregnant women. Several sources stated that most doctors and naturopaths don’t recommend it because there’s a chance it can increase testosterone in pregnant women. They mostly recommend taking it before and after pregnancy.
Many people love putting mama powder in their coffee or in smoothies, or even just sprinkling it over oatmeal or other food. I personally love blending it into tea or hot almond milk. I use a milk frother like this one since the powder doesn’t just dissolve on its own. You can also add your preferred sweetener or other spices like a dash of cinnamon. Personally I think the maca gives the drink a nice nutty flavor!
The 16 ounce Navitas brand bag is currently less than $16 on Amazon! This would be a great brand to try out, and for that price, even though I have a fresh bag waiting for me in the cupboard, I’m tempted to stock up!
And now I would love to know: have you tried maca root? How did it help you? What is your favorite way to consume it?
